Music at St Michael's Church
The Junior Choir
The Junior Choir is a very important and integral part of music-making at St. Michael's. Itwas formed in 1983, and since then has remained a very important and integral part of music-making at St. Michael's.
They have their own practice on Fridays, when the Choirmaster gives them his undivided attention, working on voice production and general musicianship, as well as practising pieces to be sung with the whole choir, and music for separate presentation.
Choristers come from many schools and parts of the town and district, and from many walks of life.
Choristers are paid a small amount for each service or practice attended and standards achieved, and a fee is paid for weddings. However, the main rewards come from the satisfaction of singing and serving in a choir which aims for high standards.
Recruitment
Simple auditions are held for boys and girls aged upwards of 8 and who are able to read fluently. No previous vocal training is required; however, playing an instrument and basic knowledge of musical notation is an advantage.
Training
Members of the Junior Choir receive collective and individual attention at their own Friday practice, and are joined by the adults for the full choir practice.
A Chorister Training Scheme is in operation in which levels of attainment are rewarded by grades and higher rates of pay.
In addition to a first-class musical education, the boys and girls are encouraged to develop self-discipline and a sense of responsibility, all in the context of the Christian Community of St. Michael's.
Local one-day courses and residential summer courses are available. These are subsidised from choir funds.
Activities
Life in the Junior Choir is not dull or sissy. Practices are enjoyable and fun. Friendship with others of all ages, including adults, produces a club/family type of atmosphere.
Special events at St. Michael's, Courses, and visits to other churches (including the Cathedral), lend richness and additional interest to the weekly music routine.
Choristers often develop a life-long love of church music.
