The Mothers’ Union was founded by Mary Sumner in 1876 in the parish of Old Alresford in the Diocese of Winchester. Now 3.6million members in over 76 countries around the world, are involved in a wide range of projects.

Internationally, the M.U. is part of the MakePovertyHistory Compaign and Grow Up Free from Poverty coalition, which lobby on issues such as poverty reduction, HIV/AIDS awareness, international debt relief and violence. They also have consultative status with the United Nations.

The St. Michael’s Branch in Basingstoke is an expanding group and the only remaining one in the Basingstoke Deanery. We meet on the 2nd Wednesday of each month in the Chapter Room of Church Cottage at 2pm. We have a wide variety of speakers; take part in Cathedral Prayers and the Festival Service; Fund raise for the Away From It All Holiday each year and support a local organisation as part of our Community work.
