Marriage in the Basingstoke Team Parish

The Parish of Basingstoke comprises Basingstoke Town Centre (except Riverdene), including Black Dam, Brookvale, Cranbourne, Kings Furlong, Oakridge, South View, and the districts of Brighton Hill, Popley, Rooksdown and South Ham. CAN WE BE MARRIED IN THE PARISH?

The law changed in 2008 and there are now more ways in which you can qualify to be married in any of the 5 churches within the Parish of Basingstoke:

You qualify to be married in the parish if

  1. you live in the parish (at an address which is your permanent place of residence)
  2. you are on the church electoral roll (as a regular worshipping member of the church in which you wish to be married)
  3. you can be granted an Archbishop's Special Licence (in certain circumstances)

and now, under the new Marriage Measure 2008,

  1. if you can prove a Qualifying Connection with the parish in any of these ways:
  1. I was baptised in the parish (by a Church of England service/form of baptism)
  2. I have been confirmed (by a Church of England service) and my confirmation is entered in a register belonging to a church or chapel in the parish
  3. My parent or grandparent was married in the parish by a Church of England service
  4. I have had my usual place of residence in the parish for at least 6 months*
  5. My parent has had his or her usual place of residence in the parish for at least 6 months during my lifetime*
  6. I have habitually attended public worship at Church of England services in the parish for at least 6 months **
  7. My parent has habitually attended public worship at Church of England services in the parish for at least 6 months during my lifetime**

Divorced?

Please note that if either of you has been divorced, and has a previous marriage partner still living (or a previous civil partner), a marriage in church may be possible, but is not automatic It is at the discretion of the parish priest and after discussions with both of you. You will need to complete the application form for 'Marriage in Church after Divorce'.
