Weekly Services
Every week there are three regular services every week at All Saints': two on Sunday and one on Thursday morning. All the services are communions, when we share bread and wine, but they also include a time for prayer, bible readings and a talk or sermon. They all have a slightly different feel, and you are welcome to come to any of them.
Sunday 8.00am
This is a simple service without any music. It lasts about 40 – 45 minutes, and usually there are about 6 – 12 people there. It takes place in the "Lady Chapel". This is the part of the church at the far end of the church on the left as you come in.
This is what someone who comes regularly wrote about this service:
"it is a place for stillness, reflection, calm and silent prayer…there is a real sense of ‘togetherness’…through the service it feels as though Christ is speaking directly to the heart, mind and soul of each person individually."
Sunday 10.00am
This is the main service of the week. There will be music and hymns, and quite a lot to look at because we like to worship using traditional ways which help us to worship with all our senses. The service lasts about 1¼ hours, and we have tea, coffee and squash afterwards if you have time to stay. You will find people of all ages at this service – we have a play area for young children on the north (left hand) side of the church with toys, books and crayons. We enjoy having children with us.
This what some people who come regularly say about this service:
"I like the ritual, the tradition and the friendly faces. I find all this calm, relaxing and familiar"
"I like the singing and seeing the flowers by the altar"
"I like the smell of incense – it is like steps up and down from heaven"
"I really enjoy meeting people and talking after the service"
"I really appreciate it that so many people help to involve and motivate our children"
Thursday 10.00am
This is a simple service. It is a communion, but without music or most of the ritual we use at 10.00 on a Sunday, and the service has a relaxed feel. The service lasts about 40 minutes and is held in the Lady Chapel (at the left hand side of the altar). Usually there are about 15 people there. We welcome everyone. Some people with babies find it easier to come to this service than the longer Sunday one; other people like a time of quiet in a busy week.
Coffee is served afterwards in the church hall.
Monthly Services
Besides our weekly pattern of worship there are other services. At festivals like Easter and Christmas there will be special services which will be on the website and we alos have two services which happen monthly: "Stillness on Sunday" and "Small Saints".
Stillness on Sunday
– 7.30pm on the 2nd Sunday of the month
This service tries to do what it says – there are very few words or music, but plenty of silence to be still and listen to our hearts and to God. We meet in the Lady Chapel area of the church, lit by candles, and through simple music, sit in stillness to share silence, some gentle words and prayer spoken or silent.
Before we leave we share coffee, cake and conversation.
Small Saints
- 3.30pm on the 3rd Sunday of the month
This service is planned for children from birth upwards with their parents. (yes, even babies enjoy songs and being with other children, and in a different sort of space). The service lasts about 30 minutes or less. We sing several simple action songs, hear a story and say simple prayers. We always end with a song with shakers and tambourines for the children. After the service there is tea and squash in the hall with toys for the children to play with and a chance for a chat.
